cutting ceremony. >>> more now on the downfall of the now former cia director david petraeus. u.s. government official is telling cnn the affair that caused petraeus' stepdown was first revealed through an fbi investigation. suzanne kelly has more now. suzanne? >> we now know from a u.s. official it was a complaint that paula broadwell, the woman who wrote the biography of general peatry was was sending harassing e-mails to another woman that prompted the fbi to investigate. also we know from that source that the investigation led to the discovery of e-mails between broadwell and petraeus that indicated the affair. that second woman hasn't been identified and the official we spoke with didn't know the nature of that woman's relationship with the former director. but more details are coming out about the time line of events and when u.s. officials were notified of the circumstances of this investigation. senior u.s. intelligence official tells cnn the fbi informed the director of national intelligence, james clapper, about the investigation on tuesday night, election night, just as

was interviewed by the fbi, but it's not clear if broadwell has been questioned and if she will be. a u.s. official said petraeus was never a target of an investigation and that a tip about an affair led to that probe. now, general petraeus was scheduled to testify next week about the attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. now what happens now that he's gone? suzanne kelly is in washington with that part of this big story. >> susan, as washington reels from the announcement not only that david petraeus is stepping down from the post, but also from the admission he was having an extramarital affair, a u.s. official has said the counter intelligence unit was investigating a tip that he was having an affair because they needed to determine whether there was a potential security risk. the official telling cnn there was no suggestion that the fbi was investigating petraeus for any possible wrongdoing. now, if there were an official investigation focused on the cia director, that would have been something that the congressional oversight committees would have been briefed on. it's a matter of s

of the hour. you're in the "cnn newsroom." thanks for joining us. here are the stories making the headlines right now. a fire breaks out today at the u.s. state department in washington. four people injured, one of them critical critically. let's go live to washington and cnn's athena jones. what do we know? >> we're a few blocks away from the state department. there's still a lot of questions about this. there was a flash fire in the duct work at the state department. this is according to a d.c. fire department official. the fire started at around 11:04 a.m. as construction workers were performing work on the state department's premises. that fire has been put out and as you said, there were four people who were injured. one of them critically. three of them were transferred to a hospital here. two are in serious condition. one is in life-threatening condition. and so we're still waiting to hear more about this. fred. >> all right, athena, keep us posted throughout the afternoon. thanks so much. >> iconic 12 actor larry hagman has died. he was best known for playing one of television's gre

single one of us, and you can bet there's plenty going on behind the scenes. this past hour we heard from the president in the east room of the white house basically announcing he's inviting leaders from both houses of congress and from both political parties to meet with him at the white house next friday. just a couple of minutes ago, we heard the president say he's open to compromise and open to new ideas, but there's one point the president is sticking to -- higher taxes for people making higher incomes. take a listen. >> i refuse to accept any approach that isn't balanced. i'm not going to ask students and seniors and middle-class families to pay down the entire deficit while people like me, making over $250,000 aren't a asked to pay a dime more in taxes. >> two hours before we saw the president, we saw the house speaker, republican, john boehner, said quote, everything on the revenue side and on the sp spending side has to be looked at but when it comes to specifics he put the ball firmly in barack obama's court. >> i don't want to box myself in or anyone else in. i think it is impo

are buying this weekend. they export a lot of clothing to us. it's a massive earner for the country. but they have lost hundreds of workers in just the last ten years because of fires like this. crowded garment factories, too many people, not enough exits, and terrible things ensue. >> it really does speak to the conditions, the working conditions? >> the working conditions are terrible. bangladesh is a very poor country and people are desperate for jobs. the garment industry can make its clothes anywhere. used to make them in china, china got to be too expensive so they're shifting jobs to cheaper countries like bangladesh, crowding people in, working them long hours under terrible conditions. i'm not speaking about this factory in particular but we know apparently from first reports there weren't enough exits. people had to jump out of the windows to get away. obviously not a lot of fire escapes. the firefighters were at the scene, apparently had trouble getting there because conditions were so crowded. when they got there, this is what they found. a lot of fabric. a lot of remain

fiscal cliff. u.s. congress and the white house have just 37 days left to reach a budget deal and stop more than $500 billion in automatic spending cuts and tax hikes from taking effect. a potentially big sticking point in those talks, that no new tax pledge of that more than 250 republican lawmakers have signed. athena jones us from the white house. two more republicans who signed the pledge said they would be open to tax hikes if they get other concessions. >> reporter: that's right, fredricka, and this is a bit interesting to see. they're talking about this pledge from the grover norquist group. he's the anti-tax crusader. his group has gotten the majority of republicans in congress to sign this pledge to oppose any effort to raise taxes in any way. so first we heard from a senator out of georgia, a republican, who said for his country he would break this pledge because if you stick to that pledge you won't be able to reach an agreement to bring down the debt. today we heard from south carolina republican senator lindsey graham and also from new york congressman peter king respondin

. the turnout was unprecedented. it was a record year of turnout. more people voted before election day using absentee ballots and voting early than ever before in our history. i think we should compliment the voters for their enthusiasm, for their commitment to democracy. but the fact is, elections are an administrative function. and if a -- decisions or judgments are made that the turnout is not going to be as high as it is or higher than it would be, you have to have enough offices open, enough ballot spaces, enough voting tabulators. and those are issues that are administrative. and the governor has directed me to present to him, and conversations here in the very near future solutions to the problem so it never happens again. he called me election night, said i want to know what we need to do and we're going to do it, we're moving ahead, lesson learned. >> i'm glad to hear lesson learned but i want to know why you did not know this going into this. florida has been the laughing stock of this country when it comes to problems at the ballot box. your particular jurisdiction is down in the
